Get a bicycle. You will certainly not regret it, if you live ” ~ Mark Twain

On a sunny, but crisp, autumn morning we set off at about 9 am, cycling in a northerly direction along the Saar River from our mooring at Saarburg. Like all our riding this week we rolled along on smooth, dedicated bike paths beside the river. We ambled along at a gentle pace of about 17 Km/hour, admiring the lush green trees on one side and the mirror-like river on the other. At Konz the Saar joined the mighty Mosel which we then followed in a south-westerly direction.

We passed through a few sleepy little towns, but only one had a coffee shop open and (would you believe it) their coffee machine was broken. It wasn’t until we reached Nittel at about 11:30 am that we were able to get our first caffeine fix for the day. A little further along the river we found a nice grassy spot at Wormeldange for our picnic lunch, not realising it was a private garden. Luckily we had finished our lunch when the irate owner noticed us and started shouting and waving his arms. He could see that we were already on our bikes, but this did not stop him from getting his large dog to hurry us on our way.

Having created an enemy in Germany we sought refuge across the river in Luxembourg. There we were given a tour of an interesting wine cellar which is capable of producing up to 1,500 bottles of white wine per hour. After sampling the produce we crossed back to the German side of the Mosel and continued on for a further 10 Km to Remich where Iris was already moored. However, before boarding our boat twelve of us rode a further two Km to Nenning to see Römische Villa, containing incredible well-preserved mosaics. Although dating back to the second century AD, the site was only discovered, by a farmer, in 1852.

Tomorrow we travel by barge and then bike to Thionville, where we have to decide whether we want to catch the train or barge to our final destination of Metz.

    • Thanks Ron, glad you have been following. We finished our last ride today in Metz (France) after a fabulous week. It feels like a Wednesday ride every day because many of the gang are here.
