Pristine Primošten
Croatia Stage 8 – Tue 26th May 2015 – Trogir to Šibenik (61 Km)
Waking up early to clear blue skies, I went for a last walk around delightful Trogir (and naturally taking a few more photos) before having a hearty breakfast at Hotel Concordia to sustain me for the 60 Km ride to Šibenik.
I set off at 8 am on what has proven to be one of the best rides yet, hugging the coast most of the way, riding on smooth, fairly flat roads. I would have made good time if the scenery had not been so irresistible, compelling me to make frequent photographic stops. During one of these stops I met up with another lone touring cyclist, a fellow of British origin now living in the south of Spain. It is always good to chat with somebody of similar interests, so we called in at Primošten for a macchiato together, before he continued on (with the view to possibly reaching Zadar today) and I wandered around Primošten with camera at the ready, taking snaps at everything I saw. Primošten is the picture post-card perfect town you see on all the catalogues advertising Croatia. Another magical gem, which possibly even surpasses Trogir, Jelsa, Dubrovnik and the rest of them. Croatia is a whole string of pearls really.
I have not seen anything in Šibenik yet that warrants taking my camera out, but I will go for another walk around soon if I can drag myself out of this fabulous, spacious apartment. Outside the street looks very run down, but inside is a real surprise. The owner, Tanja, runs a beauty shop (I can understand why) in the same building. She is very sweet too, giving me a plate of her left over home-made cakes which were absolutely delicious. The apartment is very tastefully decorated and is so big it can accommodate four persons, so I have scattered my riding gear around everywhere.
Finally I went for that stroll around town and, in fairness to Šibenik, it does have its own old-world charm … so I did manage a few snaps. It is just that it is a bit more tired than the other immaculate towns I have visited, its marble-like pavement stones don’t have quite the same lustre (but probably just as slippery when wet), and there are a few more dubious looking characters slinky around the alleyways. I am definitely going to make sure me and my bike are securely locked up inside my luxury pad before night falls. No sunset pics tonight.
I have already decided I am going to eat tonight at the Restoran-Pizzeria called “Stari Pazar” around the corner, because the nice man handing out leaflets this afternoon was so helpful in helping me to find my apartment. If the food is reasonable he will get a generous tip too.
So that is it for another day. I’ll finish off Tanja’s yummy cakes now and retire to bed. Tomorrow is another 60 Km ride to Biograd na Moru. Let’s hope the ride is as enjoyable as today.
Hi Kevin – just re-discovered your blog so will be reading it over the next few days. Hope you don’t mind if I pinch a few photos of Primošten, Sibenik, Biograd & Zadar for my own journal. More later.
Thanks – Richard
