Oświęcim is a town in southern Poland. It’s known for the Memorial and Museum Auschwitz-Birkenau, a former WWII concentration camp with preserved gas chambers and artifacts. In a medieval castle on a hilltop, Zamek Muzeum exhibits local Catholic and Jewish artifacts, plus archaeological finds. The nearby Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary has 18th-century life-size statues of St. Peter and St. Paul. Population: 39,562 (2014)
